When To Find A New Dentist

new_dentistReasons why you should find a new dentist:

  1. Have you relocated? If you have insurance with you new job you can ask for a preferred provider list. Ask neighbors and coworkers who they see and their opinions.
  2. Feeling like you’re not getting the best care? Was he too quick and didn’t take the time for a proper exam which includes: full mouth x-rays, prescreening for cancer and documentation of prior treatment done by another dentist? If you are 18 years or older the hygienist should check for gum disease by performing a periodontal exam which is a measurement of your gum tissue. Does he interact well with other patients? How did he treat his employees? These are the type of questions you should ask yourself when you go to your dentist. If you are not satisfied with any of the answers then it’s probably a good idea to seek for another dentist at Genesis Dental of Taylorsville
  3. Are the office and operatories kept sanitary? Do you see the doctor and staff where gloves and masks, if so do they change them when needed? Do the instruments look clean and sterilized? Don’t hesitate to ask if you are unsure. A dental office should avoid cross contamination with all patients. There are some patients that have Hepatitis and the sterilization process is different than patients without it. Ask what their protocol is on sterilization in different cases. Look for disinfectant sprays, a red container may be visible where they keep their sharps: needles and an oven-like machine (autoclave or Statim where they sterilize instruments.
  4. Check the doctor’s credentials and do research on where he went to school. How long has he been practicing? Find out if he updates his education. Dentistry improves and technology gets better. If he’s been practicing a while and doesn’t continue his education as well as have current technology then it’s time to seek another dentist because he may not be as educated as you thought he was.
  5. Do you need treatment? If so, does the dentist provide you with different options? If the answer is no, then run. Does he seem offended when you mention you’d like to get a second opinion? If the answer is yes, then run. Does he suggest replacing all of your silver fillings? If the answer is yes, then run. Or does he claim he can do your implants? If the answer is yes, then run.
